How to enable cheats in an existing Minecraft world

You can turn on cheats (commands) in a world you already created. In Bedrock Edition, open the world's settings and switch Cheats on. In Java Edition, open the world to LAN with commands allowed; this works for the current session only. Back up your world first, especially in Bedrock, where turning cheats on permanently disables achievements for that world.

Bedrock Edition (Windows, consoles, mobile)

1. In the world list, select the edit (pencil) icon next to your world.
2. Go to the Cheats section.
3. Turn on Activate Cheats and confirm the warning about achievements.
4. Load the world and press T or / to type commands such as /gamemode creative.

Java Edition

1. Load the world and press Esc.
2. Select Open to LAN.
3. Turn on Allow Cheats (called Allow Commands in newer versions).
4. Select Start LAN World. You can now use commands.

Cheats stay on until you quit the world. To use commands again later, repeat the steps. Making cheats permanent in Java requires editing the world's level.dat file with an external NBT editor, so only try this on a backup.
