# How to find where a game is installed on a PC

> Open the game in your launcher and use its "Browse local files" option, or right-click a shortcut and choose "Open file location".

The fastest way is through the launcher you installed the game with: in Steam, right-click the game in your Library and choose **Manage > Browse local files**; Epic, GOG Galaxy, the EA app and the Xbox app have a similar option in the game's settings. If the game has a desktop or Start menu shortcut, right-click it and choose **Open file location**. Windows opens the folder that holds the game's files.

## Steam

1. Open your **Library** and right-click the game.
2. Choose **Manage > Browse local files**.

The default folder is `C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\`. If you have several Steam library folders on other drives, you can see them under **Settings > Storage**.

## Epic Games Launcher

1. Go to **Library** and click the three dots under the game.
2. Choose **Manage**. The install location is shown with a folder icon that opens it.

The default is `C:\Program Files\Epic Games\`.

## GOG Galaxy, EA app and Xbox app

- **GOG Galaxy:** open the game, click the settings icon next to Play and look for the option to manage the installation and show the folder. Typical default: `C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\`.
- **EA app:** open the game's page or settings menu in your library; it shows or opens the install folder. Typical default: `C:\Program Files\EA Games\`.
- **Xbox app / Microsoft Store:** right-click the game, choose **Manage**, then the **Files** tab and **Browse**. Newer installs usually go to `C:\XboxGames\`. Older ones sit in the protected `WindowsApps` folder, which you can't normally open.

## Methods that work for any game

1. **Shortcut:** right-click the desktop or Start menu shortcut and choose **Open file location**.
2. **Task Manager:** start the game, press **Ctrl + Shift + Esc**, right-click the game's process and choose **Open file location**.
3. **Search:** type the game's name into File Explorer search on the drive where you installed it.

## FAQ

**Can I move a game to another drive?**
Yes, but do it through the launcher. Steam can move a game to another library folder from **Properties > Installed Files**, and other launchers have similar options. Copying the folder by hand often breaks updates.

**Why is my game folder empty or locked?**
Some Microsoft Store games are stored in protected folders. Use the Xbox app's **Browse** option instead of opening the folder directly.

**Where are my save files?**
Often not in the install folder. Many games save to `Documents`, `Saved Games` or `AppData`, and many launchers also sync saves to the cloud.

**How do I make Steam find a game that is already installed?**
Add the drive's library folder under **Settings > Storage**, then click Install on the game. Steam checks the existing files instead of downloading everything again.
